The thermal spring Well sinking In this amateur video you can see the history of the thermal well. The pictures were taken by Leimer Roland, who followed the drilling with the same enthusiasm as the birth of a child. Unfortunately, the quality is not very good, but nevertheless you get an impression of how this great adventure had its beginning many years ago.

Visit of the thermal well

You have the possibility to visit the thermal well and therefore the water that comes from a depth of 565 meters below the ground and you are welcome to touch it. Just sign up for a guided tour and you will receive a lot of interesting information.

The adventure of thermal drilling in Postal began on March 21, 2012, the day when AdFontes GmbH was founded, which has performed all previous operations related to thermal drilling. We are talking about a great adventure, because in our latitudes, in this alpine region, it is very unlikely to find thermal water. It was also an adventure because none of us had specific experience in this sector. The specialist companies for carrying out the work were found far away from the region of South Tyrol. With the help of the geologist Giovanni Ronzani and the company Samminiatese Pozzi, the well was realized. On 28 September 2012, a large quantity of water was found at a depth of 595 m. This was a day of absolute joy, although there was still a lot to do. Over the years there have been many events that have led us to found the Postal baths Development AG, which will be responsible for the construction of the Postal thermal baths.
The year 2012 ended with the completion of the thermal well. At that time we were aware that we had discovered a unique resource, but there was no concrete idea for its use. In 2013, the AFiRP - Alpine Fontes Research Programme project was launched with various branches of study. Those studies and their evaluations were presented at the conference "Geoproject" on 28 October 2015. The research areas were: 1. geological and hydrogeological framework by Dr. Geologist Giovanni Ronzani and Dr. Geologist Daniel Unngerank. 2. seasonal chemical analysis by Prof. Antonella, main responsible of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Pavia. 3. study of geochemical properties by Dr. Geologist Simone Fiaschi.4. pharmacological-toxicological study by Prof. Luca Giovannini, in charge of the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery Scientific Pharmacology University of Pisa. 5th study of thermal and geothermal potentials by Dr. Antonio Calgaro - Department of Geosciences - Lecturer in the course of Geothermal Energy - University of Padua. 6th innovative research on the change of the tidal influenced groundwater level, which coincides with the tides of the measuring station in Genoa. 7. research on the measurement of micro-quakes linked to the subsoil by PhD student Giulia Sgattoni - Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences - University of Bologna - University of Iceland. 8. research and analysis of drilling cutting - contribution to the stratigraphy of Permian volcanic deposits by Dr. Geologist Corrado Morelli - Department of Geology and Materials Testing of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. All these studies have contributed to obtain the ministerial recognition and the recognition for the use in the field of "balneotherapy".
The natural thermal water of Postal is also classified as thermal water containing salt, iodine and bromine. At the source it has a conductivity of 1288 µs with a pumping capacity of over 30 lt/s at a temperature of over 26° C. There are mainly two applications of this resource. One in the energy sector and the other in the medical sector. As for the first one, the amount of energy produced in one year has been quantified in a calorific value of 1,000,000 litres of diesel oil. This will be used to heat the structures. In the medical field, an analogous study was carried out by Prof. Angelo Baggiani of the University of Pisa. "The thermal water from the well on G.P. 168/1 .C of Postal (BZ), is mineral (solid residue of 736-745 mg/l), chlorinated (Cl 245-253 mg/l), fluorinated (F 1.8-1.9 mg/l bacteriologically pure, hypothermal (24-24.5 ° C), arsenic (As 0.30-0.36 mg/l), ferrous (Fe 0.04-0.16 mg/l and can therefore be used for "balneo-fangotherapy" for the treatment of arthrosis and dermatitis". These conclusions were recognised in D.D. 4312 of 15 July 2019 of the Ministry of Health.
